Rose bushes planted in memory of a grandmother, materials chosen to last and an oven from Palermo: the story of the house.
The name Villa Rose comes from a garden: the one belonging to Stéphanie's grandparents in Sant'Antioco. There, the grapes of "sa pregua" were eaten straight from the vine, and the spring medlars meant school was nearly over.
Her grandmother grew great magenta roses there. When she restored the house, Stéphanie planted rose bushes in her memory, and the villa took their name. Her full portrait is on our hosts page.
The materials of the restoration
For the paths, Stéphanie chose biancone, a pale limestone quarried near Orosei on Sardinia's east coast. Inside, the ceilings rest on chestnut beams, and a marble staircase leads from the living room to the upper floor.
Outside, under the pergola, the pizza oven was handmade by a craftsman in Palermo. It heats up quickly and holds its heat for hours, enough to keep the pizzas coming for the whole table. You can see it in our gallery.
A house restored for families and groups of friends, with materials made to last.
A house made for families
The house sleeps up to eleven guests in four bedrooms and a children's mezzanine, with five bathrooms, one of them outdoors by the pool. Two families can each have their own floor. The pantry holds two wine coolers, and the laundry room a washer and a dryer.
Today the vegetable garden gives tomatoes, basil and aromatic herbs to anyone who wants to pick them, 200 metres from Spiaggia Grande. The orchard is still young, and the roses bloom every year.
